Ficus Elastica, Ruby is a pretty, variegated glossy houseplant. It’s also known as a Rubber Tree or Rubber Plant. It’s easy to care for. Wonderful colors to include in your plant collection.

They don’t like to be overwatered and don’t like to be moved. Watering once a week is fine. Every two weeks during winter. I go by touch or moisture meter versus number of days, but I like to share a rough timeframe to give an idea of how frequently to water. Make sure it’s in well draining pot and soil. It doesn’t want wet feet. Water thoroughly until excess water drains out, then remove the drained water. Don’t let it sit in it. Do not let the soil dry out completely between waterings, as this can lead to leaf loss. 

It likes bright but indirect light, so leaves don’t scorch. It also likes warmth. So near a window in temps lower than 65 (think:winter time) is not a good idea. Don’t place near air or heat vents.

It likes humidity and while some people mist, I don’t recommend that due to leaf staining. Same is true when watering. Be careful and avoid getting the leaves wet when watering. The tiny plant humidifiers work fine as does having it close to other plants.

Can feed it a water soluble plant fertilizer in spring and summer once a month.

Leaf drop happens most often due to being moved, but happens if in soggy soil or considerable temp difference or any cold drafts.

Easily propagated with stem or leaf cuttings. Cut below the node.

Don’t be necessarily alarmed by yellowing leaves. The older leaves turn yellow before dropping.

Maintain shape by trimming yellow or any uneven or leggy growth. This is a plant I suggest keeping the leaves cleaned and dust free.

Repot every 1-2 years in the spring to refresh the soil and due to plant growth.

Monitor for pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
