Flour and oil kneaded into a soft, moldable dough at 8 to 1, with colored and chocolate versions.
What You’ll Need
Flour: 2 cups
Oil: 1/4 cup (baby oil or canola oil preferred)
1tspcandy food coloring (oil-based)for colored
For chocolate: cocoa powder
Large bowl
Ratio: 8 to 1 flour to oil (1/8 cup oil per cup of flour)
Directions
Basic: put 2 cups flour in a large bowl, pour in 1/4 cup oil, stir, then knead by hand until completely mixed.
Colored: first stir 1 tsp candy food coloring into the 1/4 cup oil, then add it to the flour, stir, and knead so the color spreads.
Chocolate: make the basic dough, scatter in cocoa powder, and knead.
Notes
Don't use coconut oil (it hardens as it cools). Water-based food coloring won't blend into the oil and looks speckled. Play in a shallow bin, outdoors, or over a tablecloth.Safety: NOT edible: raw flour can carry E. coli, and baby oil is mineral oil, which is dangerous if inhaled or swallowed. Supervise toddlers who mouth things; for them, a heat-treated flour and food-oil version is safer. Flour dust can bother kids with asthma or wheat allergy.
