Container soy wax melted and scented with fragrance oil, then poured into jars with wicks glued in place.
What You’ll Need
Container soy wax (e.g. Golden Brands 415 or Ky PureSoy)
Candle fragrance oil: 1 to 1 1/2 ounces per pound of soy wax (6-10% of the wax weight), weighed on a digital scale
Candle color (optional)
Candle wickssized and tested for each container
Wick adhesive (silicone, high-melt hot glue, or wick stickers)
Jars with wicks glued to the bottom
Two popsicle sticks and a clothespin (to center the wick)
Melter (e.g. kitchen kettle or microwave) and a pouring pot; thermometer; digital scale
Directions
Melt the soy wax gently.
Heat it to about 160-175 degrees (F).
Pour the wax into the pouring pot, add the color, and stir until it dissolves.
Stir in the fragrance oil.
Let the wax stand until it turns cloudy and slushy and begins to set, at around 100 degrees or a little lower, which takes 30 minutes or more.
Stir it thoroughly and pour it into the jars with the wicks in place; the jars do not need warming. Hold the wick centered with the popsicle sticks and clothespin.
Let the candles set completely, trim the wick, and let them cure for at least 48 hours before test burning.
Notes
Pouring hot (at least 170 degrees) can give flaky tops and frosty sides. Don't trim soy wicks as short as paraffin wicks. Test wick size in small batches for each container. For container soy wax only, not paraffin. Safety: use a double boiler or similar (never direct heat); watch the thermometer; ventilate, especially when adding fragrance; keep a fire extinguisher or baking soda nearby and never use water on a wax fire; wear gloves and eye protection. Never leave a burning candle unattended; keep away from kids, pets and drafts.
