Mulch Your Beds
A two- to three-inch layer of shredded bark or leaves keeps soil moist, holds down weeds and feeds the soil as it breaks down. Keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and plant stems to prevent rot. Many towns offer free wood chips.
