What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 3/4 cup water
  • Measuring cups saucepan, spoon

Equipment

  • saucepan
  • mixing bowl

Directions

  1. Stir the baking soda, cornstarch, and water together in a pot.
  2. Cook over low to medium heat, stirring all the time. Take it off as soon as it pulls away from the pot and looks like mashed potatoes. “Do not overcook!
  3. Move it to a bowl or baking sheet and let it cool to room temperature, at least half an hour.
  4. It should be very soft and easy to mold but not sticky; if it sticks, dust the surface with cornstarch.
  5. Roll it out or shape it by hand; cookie cutters work for ornaments.
  6. Let it air dry for 3 to 5 days, or bake at 200F for 1 to 1.5 hours, turning it over halfway.

Notes

Wrap unused clay in plastic wrap and keep in a zip bag or airtight container. If pieces won’t stick together, wet the joint with a bit of water.
Safety: NOT edible. Adult does the stovetop cooking; the clay is hot inside right after cooking. Dried pieces are fragile and can break into small bits; keep finished ornaments away from toddlers.
