What You’ll Need

  • 1/4 cup Elmer’s Glue All (“not school glue!”)
  • A few drops of food coloring
  • Most of 1/4 cup liquid starch

Equipment

  • mixing bowl

Directions

  1. Stir a few drops of food coloring into the glue until blended.
  2. Pour in most of the 1/4 cup liquid starch, stirring until it won’t mix in any further. Lift it out of the bowl and knead by hand.
  3. Keep squishing until it is fully mixed; it starts out stringy. If it is too gooey, rinse it under a little running water.
  4. If it is still sticky, knead in more starch (or dip the whole blob in starch).
  5. Press it onto toy cars, keys, Legos, and the like to pick up their imprints.

Notes

Store in a zip bag or it dries out. More than 5-6 drops of food coloring makes putty that stains.
Safety: NOT edible. Liquid starch (e.g., Sta-Flo) contains sodium borate, so this is a borate-activated putty: adult help, keep it out of mouths, and wash hands after. Meant for ages 3-10; for kids who still mouth things, choose an edible or borax-free option. Keep off carpet and upholstery.
