Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • whisk
  • baking sheet

Directions

  1. Heat the oven to 450°F. In a bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt.
  2. Stir in the buttermilk just until combined. The dough will be wet and sticky.
  3. Pour all of the melted butter into a 5-inch square baking dish. Spoon the dough on top of the butter (don’t stir it in) and gently spread it to fill the dish.
  4. Cut the dough into 4 squares with a knife. Set the dish on a rimmed baking sheet in case the butter bubbles over.
  5. Bake for about 15 minutes, until deep golden and the butter is bubbling at the edges. Let it stand in the dish for 10 minutes before pulling the biscuits apart.
