What You’ll Need

  • 5.5 ounces melt-and-pour soap or about 1 cup + 1 TBSP
  • 1/2 cup + 2 TBSP carrier oil (sweet almond, grapeseed, or coconut)
  • 1/2 tsp rose clay or activated charcoal powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 30 drops grapefruit sweet orange, or lavender essential oil OR 20 drops peppermint essential oil
  • Medium heat-safe glass bowl digital kitchen scale (recommended), pot, square mold (a silicone ice cube tray)

Equipment

  • microwave-safe bowl

Directions

  1. Cut the soap into small, even pieces; if you have a scale, weigh 5.5 ounces into the bowl.
  2. Fill the pot halfway with water and set it over medium heat, then set the bowl on top to make a double boiler.
  3. Stir the soap from time to time until it is completely melted, smooth, and thin.
  4. In the meantime, whisk the rose clay or charcoal briskly into the carrier oil.
  5. Whisk the oil into the melted soap; if it clumps and seizes up, leave it over the heat until it melts again.
  6. Stir in the essential oil. Lift the bowl off the heat, stir in the sugar, and pour into the mold right away (it sets fast).
  7. Chill until firm, about 1 hour. Pop out the cubes.

Notes

Squish one cube in your hand, rub it over your skin, and rinse. Store away from light and heat. The oil can make the shower floor slippery, and charcoal can stain clothing and white sinks. Safety: hot melted soap can burn, so keep kids back while melting. Do a patch test first. Peppermint oil is not for babies, young children, or pets, and citrus oils can cause sun sensitivity.
