What You’ll Need

  • 3 cups dried pasta
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol or distilled white vinegar
  • At least 10 drops food coloring (more as needed)

Equipment

  • zip-top bags
  • baking sheet

Directions

  1. Pour the alcohol or vinegar into a gallon zip-top bag.
  2. Add at least 10 drops of food coloring and swirl it around.
  3. Add the pasta, seal the bag, and shake until every piece is colored. Add more coloring if you want it brighter.
  4. Spread the pasta in one layer on a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment.
  5. Let it dry for several hours, stirring once.

Notes

Use it for crafts, sensory bins, and necklaces. Store it in an airtight container for months; if it smells of vinegar or alcohol, leave the bag open until the smell fades. Dyed pasta is not edible, and it’s a choking hazard for children under 3. Grown-ups handle the rubbing alcohol, which is flammable.
