What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • Food coloring
  • Optional: 1 tsp cream of tartar for a shinier paint

Equipment

  • saucepan
  • mixing bowl

Directions

  1. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
  2. Stir in 1 teaspoon sugar until it dissolves.
  3. Slowly whisk in 1/2 cup cornstarch, and stop once the mixture is gooey.
  4. Divide evenly among silicone muffin liners.
  5. Stir food coloring into each one.
  6. Let the paint cool all the way, then start painting.

Notes

Doesn’t keep long; make only enough for one session. Let paintings dry a few hours. Gel coloring stains hands more; liquid coloring stains less but is paler.
Safety: EDIBLE / taste-safe for toddlers, but not meant to be eaten in quantity. Adult does the boiling and checks it’s fully cool (cornstarch paste holds heat).
