What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup salt
  • ½ cup warm water
  • Mixing bowl spoon, butter knife, rolling pin, baking tray, cooling rack, spatula
  • Optional: straw, ribbon, paint and brush, magnets, glue, skewer

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • rolling pin
  • baking sheet

Directions

  1. Heat the oven to 200 degrees F.
  2. Stir the dry ingredients together.
  3. Add water, then mix and knead into a dough. Too crumbly: add warm water a little at a time. Sticky: add flour.
  4. Sprinkle flour on the work surface and roll the dough out about ¼ inch thick.
  5. Cut out house shapes with a butter knife (use the scraps for other shapes).
  6. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top for hanging. Add details with a knife or skewer, or press in a thumbprint heart.
  7. Slide a spatula under each piece and move it to a baking sheet.
  8. Bake 1.5–2 hours at 200 degrees F.
  9. Cool on a rack.
  10. Thread ribbon through the hole, paint the ornaments, and/or glue magnets on the back.

Notes

Safety: NOT edible, and they look like cookies, so hang them out of reach of toddlers and pets. Salt dough is toxic to dogs (salt poisoning) even after baking. Adult handles the oven. Contains wheat.
