Ingredients

  • 1 cup Birdseed
  • 1/2 cup Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (or use 1½ cups of any seed mix in all)
  • 1/4 cup Cornmeal (or Flour)
  • 1 teaspoon Unflavored Gelatin (about half a packet)
  • 1 tablespoon Light Corn Syrup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 4.3″ clay flowerpot 24″ yarn or string, wax paper

Equipment

  • saucepan
  • mixing bowl

Directions

  1. Line the flowerpot with wax paper, then poke a pencil through the paper and out the hole in the bottom.
  2. Fold the string in half and push the folded end through the bottom hole until a loop of about 4″ hangs out below.
  3. Stir the birdseed, sunflower seeds and cornmeal together in a bowl.
  4. Microwave 1/4 cup of water for about 30 seconds, stir in the gelatin until it dissolves, then add the corn syrup.
  5. Pour over the seeds and stir until combined.
  6. Spoon into the pot while holding the string straight up. Pat it down, leaving a few inches of string sticking out the top.
  7. Freeze for about an hour, then pull up on the wax paper to release the bell and peel the paper off.
  8. Let it set for about a week to harden fully, or tie a washer under the bell to hang it sooner. Trim any extra yarn.

Notes

Hang by the loop. Safety: use natural fiber string and remove it when the seed is gone; take down moldy bells.
