Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 envelope unflavored gelatin
  • 3 tbsp. corn syrup
  • 4 cups birdseed
  • Assorted cookie cutters/molds; nonstick spray or cooking oil; drinking straws cut to size; waxed paper; twine/ribbon (about 6 inches per mold)

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • baking sheet

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, stir the flour, water, gelatin and corn syrup together until well mixed.
  2. Stir in the birdseed until every seed is coated. The mixture is very thick, so kids may need a hand.
  3. Spray the inside of each cookie cutter with nonstick spray or brush it with oil.
  4. Fill each cutter and press the mixture flat.
  5. Push a straw through the top center and leave it there while the cookies set.
  6. Let sit overnight. Take off the cutters and straws, set the cookies on waxed paper, and thread about 6 inches of twine through each hole.

Notes

Hang in a tree outdoors. Safety: use natural twine and remove leftover string.
