Ingredients

  • 4½ cups bird seed
  • 1 ½ cups Water
  • 3 tablespoons Gelatin
  • Silicone heart mold pan cooking spray, straw, twine, wax paper

Equipment

  • mixing bowl

Directions

  1. Bring the water to a boil and pour it into a large bowl.
  2. Stir in the gelatin until it is completely dissolved.
  3. Add the bird seed and mix well.
  4. Spray the heart mold with cooking spray, then fill each cavity and press down firmly.
  5. When the hearts start to set, push a straw into each one to make the hole for the twine, away from the top and edges, and press any loose seeds back in.
  6. Let set for about 4 hours, until fully hard.
  7. Pop out onto wax paper and let dry a few more hours so the tops and bottoms dry out.
  8. Thread the twine through and tie a knot or a bow.

Notes

Hang in trees once rain has cleared. Safety: boiling water — adults handle it; remove twine once the seed is eaten.
