Ingredients

  • 35 pounds black oil sunflower seeds
  • 15 pounds safflower seeds
  • Optional: 5 pounds shelled sunflower hearts

Equipment

  • mixing bowl

Directions

  1. Mix the seeds together. Leave out filler grains such as milo, red millet, wheat, barley and oats.

Notes

Fill feeders with a ring or tray to perch on (cardinals like ground-level and platform feeders), near small trees or shrubs, with moving water nearby. Make a fresh batch monthly; store surplus airtight (heavy plastic bins, galvanized cans, lidded food-grade buckets) in a cool, dry place out of sun. Put out only what birds eat in a week or two; discard seed that clumps, discolors or smells musty. Safety: clean feeders at least every two weeks with 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water, rinse and dry fully.
