A quart jar of rice, freeze-dried chicken, broccoli and cheese powder. Simmer with water for a creamy one-pot meal, or give it as a gift.
Ingredients
- 1 cup long grain white rice
- 1 cup freeze-dried chicken
- 1/4 cup freeze-dried cheese powder
- 1/4 cup veloute powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup butter powder
- 1 tsp all-purpose seasoning
- 1/4 cup dehydrated onion
- 1 cup freeze-dried broccoli
- 1/2 cup freeze-dried celery
Equipment
- mason jars
- skillet
Directions
- Add the ingredients to the jar in the order listed, tapping the jar on the counter as you go so the powders sift into the gaps.
Notes
To cook: bring 7 cups water to a boil in a large, deep skillet or pot. Add one jar’s contents and stir. Return to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and simmer about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the rice is cooked. Serve hot; refrigerate leftovers promptly.
Storage: use only fully dry ingredients (about 10 percent moisture or less) for shelf jars. If adding an oxygen absorber, follow the package label for size, set it on the layers and seal right away; remove before cooking. Never add an absorber or vacuum-seal a jar containing anything moist. Label each jar with meal name, pack date, cooking directions and water amount. Store cool, dark and dry, ideally 40 to 60°F; rotate at least once a year.
Safety: freeze-dried chicken, cheese and butter powders can go rancid.
