Ingredients

  • 6 ounces ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
  • ½ tablespoon olive or vegetable oil
  • 1 hamburger bun
  • Optional toppings: tomato, onion, lettuce, pickles, ketchup, mustard, bacon or BBQ sauce; cheese if desired

Equipment

  • skillet

Directions

  1. Gently shape the beef into a patty about 1 inch thick and a little wider than the bun. Press a shallow dent into the center so it stays flat as it cooks. Season both sides with the salt and pepper.
  2. Heat the oil in a 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burger for about 3 minutes, then flip it and cook 2 to 5 minutes more, until it reaches 160°F.
  3. Move it to a plate, add cheese if you like, cover it loosely, and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Put it on the bun with your favorite toppings.
