Give a worn yoga mat a second job

Keep an old yoga mat in the car as a cushion for bleachers or damp grass, lay it in the tub as a non-slip mat for kids, or roll it out as a pet bed. Cut it to size for whatever you need.

Give chip canisters a second job

Tall chip canisters hold hair ties and clips in a linen closet. On beach days, fill them with crackers or pretzels; the snacks stay whole and the sand stays out.

Keep chips crisp in an ice-cream tub

Start seeds in toilet paper rolls

Cut toilet paper rolls in half, stand them in a tray, and fill them with seed-starting mix. At planting time, set the whole tube in the ground; the cardboard breaks down in the soil.
