Be the first to rate it
Sand, pebbles and potting mix layered in a mason jar with herb seeds or a starter plant. A gift that grows.
What You’ll Need
- Mason jar
- Sand: “a couple of inches” for the bottom layer
- Small rocks or pebbles: one layer over the sand (sand and rocks together fill “a third to a half” of the jar)
- Potting mix to fill the rest of the jar
- Seeds or a starter plant
- Optional: adhesive labels, a glass marker, or small tags
Equipment
- mason jars
Directions
- Pour a couple of inches of sand into the bottom of the jar.
- Top it with a layer of rocks or pebbles.
- Fill the rest of the jar with potting mix, which is better for herbs than potting soil.
- Starter plant: Gently loosen the roots and set the plant in. Seeds: Sprinkle them on top, cover lightly with mix, and water.
- Add a label if you like.
- Place it where it gets several hours of sun each day.
Notes
Gift jar. Watch the drainage layer through the glass to avoid overwatering (jars have no drainage holes). Mint and oregano stay contained in small jars. Follow the seed packet for germination and watering.
Safety: Wear gloves and avoid breathing dust when handling dry potting mix (it can carry bacteria such as Legionella); moisten it first. Small pebbles are a choking hazard for kids under 3.
