What You’ll Need

  • Orchid bark: 50%
  • Perlite: 15%
  • Sphagnum moss: about 20%
  • Peat moss or coconut coir: 15%

Equipment

  • mixing bowl

Directions

  1. Make orchid bark 50% of the mix.
  2. Add 15% perlite for drainage and airflow.
  3. Add about 20% sphagnum moss to hold moisture and nutrients.
  4. Add 15% peat moss or coconut coir, which is the eco-friendly choice, so the orchid does not dry out too quickly.
  5. Chop the moss ingredients finely so they do not block air from reaching the roots.
  6. Mix everything together, and adjust the proportions for your type of orchid, the pot size, and how the plant responds.

Notes

Repot when the old material is waterlogged or broken down, or the plant has outgrown its pot. Orchid roots need air: avoid dense soil or materials like coffee grounds.
Safety: Wear gloves with dry sphagnum moss (it can carry a fungus that causes skin infection through cuts) and a dust mask with perlite.
