What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup applesauce
  • Approximately 3/4 cup ground cinnamon (plus more for dusting)
  • 2 tablespoons ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon ground allspice
  • Green or red heavy thread (or ribbon)
  • Straw or wooden skewer; 1-1/2 inch cookie cutters; parchment-lined baking sheets

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • rolling pin
  • baking sheet

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, stir the applesauce and spices until a stiff dough forms, adding more cinnamon if needed.
  2. Dust a board with cinnamon and roll the dough out to 1/4-inch thickness. Dip the cutters in cinnamon, cut out shapes, and reroll the scraps. Set the shapes on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  3. Use a straw or skewer to make a small hole at the top of each one.
  4. Bake at 200° for 20 to 30 minutes.
  5. Move them to paper towels and let them dry thoroughly. Once they are completely dry and cool, thread ribbon or thread through each hole and tie a loop.

Notes

Hang as scented holiday decorations. Not edible (so). Keep away from toddlers and pets (large amounts of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves are harmful if eaten; nutmeg is toxic to dogs). Cinnamon dust can irritate eyes and lungs; supervise kids.
