What You’ll Need

  • 1 teaspoon honey (raw, manuka)
  • 2 teaspoons sugar (brown, coconut, sucanat)
  • 1 teaspoon oil (almond, olive, coconut, jojoba)
  • Small bowl lidded cosmetic container
  • Optional add-ins : a dash of cinnamon or cayenne (start with a tiny amount); a vitamin E capsule; a dash of cocoa powder; a mashed strawberry; 1/4-1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice; 1-2 drops of an essential oil; a drop of peppermint oil; a teaspoon of vanilla extract

Equipment

  • mixing bowl

Directions

  1. Put everything in a small bowl and stir well; the scrub should feel gritty enough to exfoliate without being dry.
  2. Spoon into a cosmetic container with a lid.
  3. Use within 2 weeks.

Notes

Cleanse lips, apply a small amount with short gentle strokes, massage in circles 1-2 minutes, rinse, then apply lip balm. Use no more than a couple of times a week. Store airtight; keeps up to two weeks. With fresh ingredients (strawberry), refrigerate and use within 3-5 days. If honey crystallizes in the fridge, warm the container under running water; if coconut oil hardens, let it sit at room temperature. Do not eat the scrub (it may contain essential oils), and do not use it on sunburned, extremely chapped, or cracked lips; avoid strawberry if lips are cracked. Safety: cinnamon, cayenne and peppermint can irritate; honey is not for babies under 1 year; keep essential oils away from young children.
