What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch (or arrowroot powder)
  • 30 drops lavender essential oil (no more than 40)
  • Water added 1 tablespoon at a time
  • Optional: about 12 drops food coloring

Equipment

  • mixing bowl

Directions

  1. Stir the baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch together in a large bowl.
  2. Mix in 1 tablespoon water, then a second. Add more only if needed, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it packs like damp sand.
  3. Stir in the essential oil and food coloring.
  4. Pack it into molds, or press it into balls with your hands.
  5. Let them dry overnight, then unmold them.

Notes

Set one on the shower floor where the water splashes it, but not right under the stream. Store them in a covered container; if they sit more than a week, add a drop of oil before using. Many essential oils are unsafe for pets, young children, and during pregnancy.
