What You’ll Need

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • A jar that seals
  • Pot of boiling water

Equipment

  • mason jars

Directions

  1. Put the baking soda, salt and cream of tartar in the jar, close it, and shake.
  2. Pour half of it down the drain and save the rest.
  3. Pour a pot of boiling water down after it.
  4. Wait one hour, then run tap water to rinse.

Notes

Remove the drain screen or stopper and clear visible gunk first. Other mixes : 1/2 cup each baking soda and vinegar (plug 1 hour, then boiling water); 1/2 cup each baking soda and lemon juice; 1/2 cup each salt and baking soda (30 minutes to overnight).
Safety: don’t pour boiling water into PVC pipes, a porcelain sink or a toilet — use very hot tap water instead. Never use after a commercial drain cleaner is in the pipe. Label the jar.
