What You’ll Need

  • Firm orange
  • Pack of dried cloves
  • Ribbon (optional)
  • Skewer or thick needle (optional)

Equipment

  • scissors

Directions

  1. Wrap a ribbon around the orange and tie a bow at the top.
  2. Press cloves into the peel, either in light patterns or covering the whole orange. If they are hard to push in, poke the peel first with a skewer or thick needle.
  3. Hang one as an ornament, or keep several together in a bowl.
  4. Optional, for a long life: Dry it in a dehydrator or in the oven at 150F/65C for several hours, until it is light, dried out, and sounds hollow when tapped.

Notes

Fresh pomanders last 3-4 days (refrigerating overnight may stretch this). Dried ones can last several years. Store in a cool, dry place to prevent mold. Safety: supervise kids with skewers and needles; cloves and clove oil can irritate skin. Not for eating; keep away from pets (citrus and cloves are harmful to cats and dogs).
