What You’ll Need

  • Pinecones
  • Essential oils about 30 drops total (about 20 drops cinnamon oil and about 10 drops clove oil)
  • Gallon zip-top bag
  • Large bowl or sink of water; plate to weigh cones down
  • Foil-lined cookie sheet; oven

Equipment

  • baking sheet
  • zip-top bags

Directions

  1. Soak the pinecones in water for about an hour to wash off debris and critters, weighing them down with a plate.
  2. Once they are dry, bake them on a foil-lined sheet at 200º for about 30 minutes to open them up and kill any remaining germs.
  3. Let them cool completely, then put them in the zip-top bag, add the essential oils, seal it, and shake well.
  4. Set the bag aside for one week, or two weeks for a stronger scent.

Notes

Safety: watch cones in the oven, as sap can scorch; don't bake above the stated temperature. Cinnamon and clove oils irritate skin (wear gloves) and are toxic to cats and dogs; keep cones away from pets and toddlers who might chew them. Not for use as fire starters once oiled indoors near candles.
