Orange Half Feeders

Make orange half bird feeders by cutting an orange in half and hanging it with a stick perch and cord. Orioles and catbirds love them.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe orange
  • Knife
  • Thin stick such as a kabob skewer or plastic stirrer
  • Strong cord

Equipment

  • chef’s knife

Directions

  1. Cut the orange in half (one half at a time is plenty).
  2. Choose a spot where the orange can sit firmly without tipping.
  3. Push the stick through the center of the orange half (an adult should handle any sharp tools).
  4. Hold the stick against a thick branch, fence, post or railing so the two form a T or a cross.
  5. Tie it in place by winding cord back and forth in an X several times. Or, using cord alone, tie the half, cut side up, to a flat railing or sturdy branch.
  6. Make sure it cannot slide down when an oriole lands.

Notes

Orioles peck at the juice and pulp. Swap in fresh halves before they dry out, mold or draw ants and wasps. Safety: adult supervision with knives and skewers.
