Ingredients

  • 1 (2 3/4 ounce) package country gravy mix (regular or no-fat)
  • 1 tablespoon chicken bouillon granules
  • 2 teaspoons imitation bacon bits
  • 2 teaspoons dried celery flakes
  • 2 teaspoons dried onion flakes
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
  • 1 1/4 cups dried split green peas
  • 1 bay leaf
To cook
  • 6 cups water

Equipment

  • mason jars
  • stockpot

Directions

  1. Pour the gravy mix into a wide-mouth pint jar.
  2. Stir the bouillon, bacon bits, celery, onion, and parsley together and spoon them in as the second layer.
  3. Add the split peas, lay the bay leaf on top, close the jar, and attach the cooking directions.

Notes

To cook, empty the jar into a large saucepan or Dutch oven and add 6 cups water. Bring it to a boil, stirring often. Turn the heat down, cover, and simmer 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring often, until the peas are tender. Take out the bay leaf. Serve with a spoonful of sour cream and a few bacon bits if you like. A low-sodium gravy mix keeps it from getting too salty.
