Ingredients

  • 2 medium apples
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • ¼ cup old-fashioned oats
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ tablespoon salted butter divided
  • ¼ cup boiling water

Equipment

  • mixing bowl

Directions

  1. Heat the oven to 375°F. Core each apple from the stem end without cutting through the bottom. Leave about ½ inch of apple at the base.
  2. Mix the oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Press the mixture into the apple centers.
  3. Set the apples in a 5-inch baking dish. Divide the ½ tablespoon butter between them and dot it over the filling.
  4. Pour the boiling water into the dish around the apples, not over them.
  5. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until a knife slides into the apples easily. Spoon the juices over the apples and let them cool a little before serving.
