Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons oil (coconut oil, vegetable oil, or ghee)
  • 1/4 cup popcorn kernels
  • Seasoning to taste: salt and cracked pepper; cinnamon and sugar; Parmesan and garlic powder; powdered cheddar or nutritional yeast; ranch, taco or another spice blend

Equipment

  • stockpot

Directions

  1. Put the oil and three kernels in a metal pot with a lid over medium heat on a camp stove or campfire grate.
  2. When all three kernels pop, take the pot off the heat, add the rest of the kernels, shake to coat, cover, and put it back on the heat.
  3. When the popping starts, tip the lid open a crack to let steam out, and shake the pot gently now and then.
  4. When the pops slow to a second or two apart, take it off the heat, pour the popcorn into a large bowl, and season it.

Notes

Pack the kernels, oil, and a small jar of your favorite seasoning together for the trip. The pot and oil get very hot, so keep children back. Popcorn is a choking hazard for children under 4.
