What You’ll Need

  • Mason jars or any recycled glass jars
  • Hemp twine or jute twine
  • Mod Podge (original matte) or a craft glue that dries clear such as Elmer’s
  • Regular salt or kosher salt (coarse kosher salt works best)
  • Natural or artificial pine cones berries, and conifer cuttings
  • Battery-powered LED fairy string lights or white votive candles
  • Optional: clear acrylic spray (reader’s tip for sealing the salt)

Equipment

  • mason jars
  • paintbrush

Directions

  1. Move fast, before the glue sets. Spread glue or Mod Podge evenly over the outside of the jar with no dry patches and no drips (keep the top rim bare).
  2. Hold a handful of salt over the glued surface and sprinkle it on as you turn the jar. Do not touch the glued, salted area.
  3. Let it dry in a warm spot for 10 to 20 minutes, then gently brush off any loose salt.
  4. Wrap twine around the rim of each jar. Bundle berry sprigs and/or conifer cuttings together with twine, then glue the bundle onto the twine at the rim.
  5. Drop a switched-on battery LED fairy light into the jar, or set a white votive candle inside (1.5-inch LED candles fit most jar openings).
