Ingredients

  • 1 lb. beef suet (or lard)
  • 1/2 cup dried unsweetened cranberries
  • 1/2 cup all-natural unsalted peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup oatmeal (quick or rolled, not instant)
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal (finely ground preferred)
  • 1/2 cup sunflower seed hearts

Equipment

  • saucepan
  • fine sieve

Directions

  1. Chop the suet and melt it over low heat until liquid. Strain it through cheesecloth or a fine strainer and let it cool a little.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the peanut butter, oatmeal, cornmeal, sunflower hearts and cranberries, then slowly stir in the melted suet until evenly combined.
  3. Pack into molds (muffin tins, loaf pans, silicone molds) or shape to fit a suet cage.
  4. Let cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate or freeze until solid.
  5. Place in a feeder and hang it in the shade.

Notes

Safety: NH Fish and Game recommends feeding December 1 to April 1 and removing suet after April 1 so it doesn’t draw bears. Hot rendered fat burns, melt over low heat. Winter food only; it spoils in warm weather.
