Brass and copper cleaner

Lemon, salt and a gentle rub.

  1. The recipe

    Lemon and salt

    You need

    • 1 lemon
    • Table salt

    How

    1. Halve and seed the lemon, coat the cut side with salt and rub over the metal, adding salt as needed.
    2. Leave up to an hour, then rinse, dry and buff.

Use a magnet test: if it sticks, the piece is plated. Clean plated or lacquered brass only with hot soapy water. No steel wool or metal brushes.

  2. Another recipe

    Salt, flour and vinegar paste

    You need

    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon flour
    • 1/2 cup white vinegar

    How

    1. Mix a paste, apply and leave up to an hour.
    2. Rinse with warm water and buff dry.

Not on antiques or cookware linings without checking. Rinse well so the acid does not keep etching.

  3. Another recipe

    Lemon, salt and cornstarch paste

    You need

    • Equal parts non-iodized salt and cornstarch
    • Lemon juice

    How

    1. Mix with lemon juice into a paste and rub gently on with a soft rag.
    2. Rinse with warm water and mild dish soap, then dry with a soft cloth.

    Not for lacquered finishes.
