Grill grate cleaner

Three ways to clean grates before the next cookout.

  1. The recipe

    Foil scrub

    You need

    • 1 1/2 cups baking soda and 1/2 cup water
    • 2 to 3 feet aluminum foil
    • A brush or sponge

    How

    1. Mix the baking soda and water into a thick paste and coat the grates.
    2. Wait a few minutes, scrub each wire with a crumpled ball of foil, then rinse.

Let the grill and grates cool first. Optional first step: heat the grill on high to loosen food, then let it cool.

  2. Another recipe

    Cast iron paste

    You need

    • 1 1/2 cups baking soda
    • 1/4 cup dish soap
    • 1/4 cup white vinegar
    • Vegetable oil

    How

    1. Mix into a frothy paste and paint it on the grates, avoiding gas burners.
    2. Close the grill (do not turn it on) and leave 8 to 12 hours.
    3. Scrub with a nylon brush, wipe with warm water, dry, and rub with vegetable oil.

Do not light the grill during the soak.

  3. Another recipe

    No-scrub soak

    You need

    • 2 cups white vinegar
    • 1 cup baking soda
    • A large garbage bag and a rubber band

    How

    1. With the grates completely cool, put the vinegar and baking soda in the bag (it foams), add the grates and seal loosely.
    2. Leave in a cool spot 8 to 12 hours, then rinse with a hose and rub off what is left.
    3. Throw away the bag and liquid.

Do not seal the bag tight (foam builds pressure). Wear gloves and keep it away from children and pets.

  4. Another recipe

    Porcelain or enamel grates

    You need

    • Baking soda
    • A damp scour sponge (no metal tools)

    How

    1. Wet the grates and sprinkle baking soda on liberally.
    2. Wait 10 minutes, scrub with the damp sponge and rinse.

Check for loose wire bristles if you use a wire brush.
