What You’ll Need

  • 2 Tablespoons Beeswax
  • 2 Tablespoons Shea Butter
  • 2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
  • Essential oil optional (about 12 drops)
  • Optional: a few drops of Vitamin E oil or Organic Rosemary Extract
  • Clean empty lip balm tubes or small pots small saucepan kept just for body products, eyedropper or clean medicine dispenser, parchment paper (optional)

Equipment

  • double boiler

Directions

  1. Melt the beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil together in a small saucepan over medium-low heat (or in a glass bowl in the microwave).
  2. Take off the heat; stir in a few drops of essential oil to taste, or leave it out.
  3. While the mixture is still liquid, fill the containers using an eyedropper or medicine dispenser (warm it again if it begins to set).
  4. Leave to cool without moving.

Notes

Cook time about 10 minutes. Store cool (or in the fridge) since warmth melts it; it lasts at least 1 year, or 1 to 2 years in a cool, dry place. Don’t use lemon, lime, or most citrus oils on lips because they are phototoxic (sweet orange is the exception), and don’t use alcohol-based vanilla or mint extracts, which dry the lips. Substitutions: olive, sunflower, sweet almond, avocado or jojoba oil for coconut oil; candelilla wax for beeswax (vegan); mango or cocoa butter for shea. Vitamin E and rosemary extract slow rancidity but are not preservatives. Safety: hot wax burns; peppermint and cinnamon oils can irritate lips and are not for young children; keep essential oil use low on lips.
