What You’ll Need

  • 1 teaspoon castile soap
  • 4 cups water
  • 5 to 10 drops essential oil (optional; peppermint, orange or lavender)
  • Spray bottle; microfiber mop (or Swiffer-type mop wrapped in microfiber)

Equipment

  • spray bottle
  • funnel

Directions

  1. Sweep or vacuum first.
  2. Put the soap, water and oil in the spray bottle, put the cap on, and shake well.
  3. Test on a hidden spot (under furniture), rinse, and check for damage.
  4. Mist about 3 square feet at a time, and never use so much that water pools on the floor.
  5. Mop in the direction of the grain with a dry microfiber mop; rinse and wring out the pad when it gets dirty.

Notes

Safety: no vinegar or lemon (acid can strip urethane and leave floors cloudy); no baking soda or abrasives; avoid excess water (swelling, cupping, warping). Peppermint and citrus oils are toxic to pets, skip oils or keep pets off until dry.
