Sara’s own photo of the Anna’s Hummingbird will go here.

At a glance

  • Favorite foods: nectar from flowers and feeders, plus tiny insects
  • Best feeders: nectar (hummingbird) feeder
  • Plants: fuchsia, salvia, manzanita, red-flowering currant
  • Habitat: gardens and coastal scrub
  • Nesting: a tiny cup on a branch
  • Seasonality: year-round along much of the Pacific coast

Best foods

Make nectar with 1 part plain white sugar to 4 parts water. Do not add red dye or honey.

Best feeders

Use a hummingbird feeder with feeding ports, and clean it each time you refill it. Change the nectar every few days, and more often in hot weather.

Plants that attract

Fuchsia, salvia, manzanita and red-flowering currant give nectar, and some bloom in winter.

Water and habitat

A fine mist or a shallow fountain is a favorite. Skip pesticides, since they also eat tiny insects.

Nesting and shelter

Anna’s Hummingbirds build a tiny cup nest on a branch. They do not use birdhouses.

Seasonal tips

Because they stay all year in many places, keep the feeder up in winter too, and keep it from freezing.

One practical tip

Hang the feeder in light shade, and clean it often.

Fun fact

A male Anna’s makes a sharp chirp with his tail feathers when he dives during his courtship display.
