Dryobates villosus

A black-and-white woodpecker like the Downy, but bigger, with a long bill.

Sara’s own photo of the Hairy Woodpecker will go here.

At a glance

  • Favorite foods: suet, peanuts, black oil sunflower seed
  • Best feeders: suet feeder, peanut feeder, hopper
  • Plants: mature trees, including some dead wood
  • Habitat: woods and large wooded yards
  • Nesting: holes the bird digs in trees
  • Seasonality: year-round

Best foods

Suet is the favorite. Hairy Woodpeckers also eat peanuts and black oil sunflower seed.

Best feeders

Use a sturdy suet feeder, a peanut feeder or a hopper feeder. This is a bigger bird than the Downy, so give it room.

Plants that attract

Mature trees, and a dead tree or branch if it is safe to leave one standing.

Water and habitat

Offer a birdbath with fresh water, and keep large trees nearby.

Nesting and shelter

Hairy Woodpeckers dig their own nest holes in trees, so they do not use nest boxes much.

Seasonal tips

Suet is especially welcome in winter, when insects are hard to find.

One practical tip

If you see a Downy-like woodpecker that is bigger, check the bill. It is the easiest way to tell the two apart.

Fun fact

A Hairy Woodpecker has a bill almost as long as its head, while the Downy’s bill is much shorter.
