Best foods

Pileated Woodpeckers eat carpenter ants. At feeders they take suet, and they also eat fruit and nuts.

Best feeders

Use a big, sturdy suet feeder, such as a log or a large cage feeder, and mount it on a tree trunk or a stout post.

Plants that attract

Mature trees, and fruiting plants such as dogwood and elderberry.

Water and habitat

Offer a large birdbath with fresh water, and keep mature trees close.

Nesting and shelter

Pileated Woodpeckers dig big nest holes in dead trees. They do not use ordinary nest boxes.

Seasonal tips

Offer suet all year, especially in winter.

One practical tip

Leave dead trees and stumps standing, where it is safe. They are the best pantry for this bird.

Fun fact

A Pileated Woodpecker can dig a hole that is oval or rectangular and large enough to see from a distance.
