At a glance

  • Favorite foods: peanuts in the shell, black oil sunflower seed, cracked corn
  • Best feeders: platform feeder, peanut feeder, ground tray
  • Plants: oaks (acorns), beeches, dogwood
  • Habitat: woods and yards with big trees
  • Nesting: in the fork of a tree, not birdhouses
  • Seasonality: year-round

Best foods

Peanuts in the shell are the favorite. Blue Jays also eat black oil sunflower seed, cracked corn and acorns.

Best feeders

Blue Jays are big birds, so give them room: a platform feeder or a sturdy tray, or a feeder made for whole peanuts.

Plants that attract

Oaks are the best plant for Blue Jays because they love acorns. Beeches and dogwood help too.

Water and habitat

Blue Jays visit birdbaths. Keep the water fresh, and keep tall trees nearby for them to perch in.

Nesting and shelter

Blue Jays build bulky cup nests in the forks of trees. They do not use birdhouses.

Seasonal tips

Blue Jays stay in much of Michigan in winter. Whole peanuts are a good winter treat.

One practical tip

Put out a handful of peanuts in the shell on a platform feeder at the same time each day. Blue Jays learn the routine fast.

Fun fact

Blue Jays bury acorns and forget some of them, which helps new oak trees grow.
