At a glance

  • Favorite foods: insects, small mammals and birds (it does not use feeders)
  • Best feeders: none
  • Plants: mature trees with cavities
  • Habitat: woods and wooded yards
  • Nesting: tree cavities and large nest boxes
  • Seasonality: year-round

Best foods

Screech-owls do not eat birdseed. They hunt insects, small mammals and small birds at night.

Best feeders

Owls do not use feeders. Skip the feeders and offer a nest box and a birdbath instead.

Plants that attract

Mature trees, especially those with natural cavities, give screech-owls a place to rest during the day.

Water and habitat

A birdbath with fresh water helps. Screech-owls will bathe and drink, and a few trees nearby give them cover.

Nesting and shelter

Screech-owls use tree cavities and nest boxes. A nest box needs an entrance hole about 3 inches wide. Check the Cornell Lab plans for the right size and height.

Seasonal tips

Screech-owls are around all year and nest in early spring.

One practical tip

Leave dead trees standing when it is safe, and put up a nest box in late winter, before the nesting season.

Fun fact

Screech-owls come in two color forms, a gray one and a reddish one, even within the same family.
