At a glance

  • Favorite foods: suet, black oil sunflower seed, peanuts
  • Best feeders: suet feeder, tube, hopper
  • Plants: oaks, hickories and other mature trees
  • Habitat: mature woods and wooded yards
  • Nesting: tree cavities
  • Seasonality: year-round

Best foods

Suet is a favorite, along with black oil sunflower seed, sunflower hearts and peanuts.

Best feeders

A suet feeder, tube feeder or hopper feeder works well. Nuthatches like to land on the trunk or a feeder near a tree.

Plants that attract

Oaks, hickories and other mature trees with bark that holds insects and seeds.

Water and habitat

Offer a birdbath with fresh water, and keep mature trees in the yard.

Nesting and shelter

Nuthatches nest in tree cavities. Leave dead trees standing when it is safe to do so.

Seasonal tips

Nuthatches visit feeders all winter. Suet is especially welcome in cold weather.

One practical tip

Put a suet feeder on a tree trunk or on a post near trees. Nuthatches go to feeders close to tree trunks.

Fun fact

The nuthatch often climbs down a tree trunk head first, which most other birds do not do.
