Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Archilochus colubris

A tiny summer visitor that drinks nectar and loves red flowers.

Photo coming soon
Sara’s own photo of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird will go here.

At a glance

  • Favorite foods: nectar from flowers and feeders, plus tiny insects
  • Best feeders: nectar (hummingbird) feeder
  • Plants: bee balm, cardinal flower, trumpet vine, salvia
  • Habitat: gardens and woodland edges
  • Nesting: a tiny cup of plant down on a branch
  • Seasonality: spring to early fall; winters far to the south

Best foods

Make nectar with 1 part plain white sugar to 4 parts water. Do not add red dye or honey, and do not use sugar substitutes.

Best feeders

Use a hummingbird feeder with feeding ports, and clean it each time you refill it. Change the nectar every few days, and more often in hot weather.

Plants that attract

Bee balm, cardinal flower, trumpet vine and salvia give hummingbirds nectar. Flowers that are red or orange and tubular are favorites.

Water and habitat

A fine mist or a shallow fountain is a favorite. Hummingbirds also eat tiny insects, so skip pesticides.

Nesting and shelter

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds build a tiny cup nest, about the size of a walnut, on a branch. They do not use birdhouses.

Seasonal tips

Put your feeder out when hummingbirds return in spring, and leave it up a couple of weeks after you see the last one in fall.

One practical tip

Hang the feeder in light shade, and put it near flowers they already visit.

Fun fact

A hummingbird’s wings beat about 50 times a second.
