Sara’s own photo of the Eastern Bluebird will go here.

At a glance

  • Favorite foods: mealworms, fruit, suet bits (not seed)
  • Best feeders: open platform or bluebird feeder
  • Plants: native berry plants such as dogwood, holly and sumac
  • Habitat: open lawns and fields with a few trees
  • Nesting: nest boxes, with a 1 1/2 inch hole
  • Seasonality: year-round in the Southeast, spring to fall farther north

Best foods

Bluebirds do not eat birdseed. Offer mealworms, and fruit such as raisins and berries, on an open tray.

Best feeders

Use an open platform feeder or a feeder made for bluebirds, with a hole big enough for them to enter.

Plants that attract

Native berry plants such as dogwood, holly and sumac. Short grass with a few trees to perch on helps too.

Water and habitat

Bluebirds love a birdbath, especially a shallow one. Add moving water if you can.

Nesting and shelter

Put up a nest box with a 1 1/2 inch entrance hole, on a pole in an open area, and keep it clean. Check the North American Bluebird Society for plans.

Seasonal tips

Put the nest box up by late winter, before nesting starts.

One practical tip

Place the nest box on a smooth pole in a mowed, open area with a tree or two nearby.

Fun fact

The bluebird’s blue is not a pigment. It comes from the tiny structure of the feathers.
