Pine Siskin

Spinus pinus

A small, streaky finch with yellow flashes in its wings that arrives in flocks.

About the Pine Siskin

Some winters you won't see a single pine siskin. Other winters, a whole twittering flock shows up and empties the thistle feeder in an afternoon. Their numbers swing wildly from year to year.

At first glance a siskin looks like a streaky brown sparrow, but look closer: it has a thin, sharp bill and flashes of yellow in its wings and tail, easiest to see when it flies. It's really a little finch in disguise, and it often feeds right alongside goldfinches.

  • Best feeders: nyjer tube, tube
  • Plants: evergreens, alders and birches
  • Habitat: evergreen forests

  • Seasonality: irregular winter visitor in much of the region

Best foods

Pine Siskins love nyjer seed. They also eat sunflower hearts and black oil sunflower seed.

Best feeders

A nyjer tube or mesh feeder, or a tube feeder.

Plants that attract

Evergreens, alders and birches.

Water and habitat

A shallow birdbath with fresh water.

Nesting and shelter

Pine Siskins nest in evergreen trees, so they do not use birdhouses.

Seasonal tips

Siskins come and go by year. In some winters, they show up in big flocks.

One practical tip

Clean feeders every week or two, especially when siskins visit. Crowded finches can pass on illness.

Fun fact

Pine Siskins flash yellow in their wings and tail when they fly.
