At a glance

  • Favorite foods: ants and other insects, suet, peanuts
  • Best feeders: suet feeder, ground or platform
  • Plants: berry shrubs and mature trees
  • Habitat: open woods, edges and lawns
  • Nesting: a hole in a dead tree or branch
  • Seasonality: year-round in much of the region; many migrate north

Best foods

Flickers eat many ants and beetles. At feeders they take suet, and sometimes peanuts.

Best feeders

Use a sturdy suet feeder with a tail prop, or put suet on a platform. Flickers also feed on the lawn.

Plants that attract

Berry shrubs such as dogwood and sumac, and mature trees.

Water and habitat

Offer a birdbath with fresh water, and leave an open lawn where they can hunt ants.

Nesting and shelter

Flickers dig nest holes in dead trees. They will use a large nest box filled with wood chips.

Seasonal tips

Many flickers leave in fall and return in spring, but some stay all winter and love suet.

One practical tip

Leave a dead tree standing when it is safe, and skip the lawn chemicals.

Fun fact

Unlike most woodpeckers, flickers often feed on the ground.
