Ashes

Ashes is a soot-type stain, so brush off the loose bits before wetting it.

  1. Try this first

Small loads, washed again and again

Wash in a small load so the fabric has room to move, with a liquid laundry detergent or one made to remove odors. Repeat the wash 3 to 5 times. Do not dry the items between washes: air-dry them if the fabric must be dried. Skip fabric softener until the smoke damage and smell are gone.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

    A dry cleaner that deodorizes

Or take the clothing to a dry cleaner that offers a deodorizing service, such as ozone treatment.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
