Shoe polish

One way for colored clothes, one for white upholstery.

  1. Try this first

Colored clothes: pre-wash remover, then detergent

Sponge with a pre-wash soil and stain remover and let it dry. Repeat if needed, then rinse. Rub detergent into the damp stain and launder.

Test any stain remover on a hidden seam or hem first, and check the care label.

  2. Then try

    Colored clothes: rubbing alcohol

If the stain stays, sponge it with rubbing alcohol, rinse and launder again. Use chlorine bleach for any last trace only if the fabric can take it.

Rubbing alcohol can take dye out of fabric. Test a hidden spot first.

  3. Then try

White upholstery: warm water and a household cleaner

Quickly blot off the extra polish with paper towels. Sponge with warm water and blot with a folded white cloth, turning it as it picks up polish. If a mark stays, blot with a white cloth sprayed with a household cleaner such as 409 or Fantastic, several times, then sponge with clear water and blot to remove all the cleaner.

Too much water can leave a ring on upholstery. Test a hidden spot first.

  4. Then try

    Liquid or paste polish

For liquid polish, pretreat with a paste of detergent powder and water, then launder. For paste polish, scrape off the residue with a dull knife, pretreat with a pre-wash stain remover and rinse, work detergent into the damp area and launder with a bleach that is safe for the fabric.

Check the care label and test a hidden spot first. Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone.
