Laundry mishaps

Oil-based paint on clothes

Treat it while it is wet, with the thinner on the can.

  1. Try this first

    Scrape and thin

Outdoors, scrape off the extra paint with a dull knife. Dab the thinner named on the can on the back of the stain, with a cloth under it, working from the outside in, until no more color comes off.

Thinners are flammable and the fumes are harmful: no flames, fresh air, gloves.

  2. Then try

    Then wash

Rub dish soap into the spot and wash in the hottest water the fabric allows. Check before drying. Dried oil paint seldom comes out, so keep painting clothes for painting.

Lay solvent-soaked rags flat outdoors to dry, away from anything that burns, or soak them in a water-filled metal can.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
