Tar and asphalt

Scrape off the bulk, then use a waterless hand cleaner, the kind sold for greasy hands.

  1. Try this first

    Scrape, then hand cleaner

Scrape off as much as you can with a dull knife. Work waterless hand cleaner (the creamy kind sold for mechanics) into the stain, rub gently, let it stand and repeat, then rinse well with water. Rub in liquid detergent and launder in hot water, with chlorine bleach only if the fabric allows.

Hand cleaners often contain petroleum products: test a hidden spot, keep away from flames and read the label. No chlorine bleach on silk, wool or spandex.

Still there? Try the all-purpose ways or pick another stain.
